Have you ever wondered how many people play video games? And have you ever thought how many types of people play video games?

Well, the answer to the first question would be shaky as the population of video game players is increasing day by day. However the answer to the second question can be a stable and logical one, as every video game player falls under a specific category. So let us take a look at who exactly are the video game players and the types of players who play video games.

First of all, a video game player is a person who likes to play video games, be it on consoles or computer systems. He plays game either as a recreation, routine or obsession. Most video game players belong to the generation X and Y. Initially video gaming was considered to be a male hobby. As the craze of video games proliferated, female also started getting involved in video games and today 30 % population of video gamers consists of females.

Now, coming on to the aspect of people playing video games, there are some categories of people who play video games. These categories have been made according to their playing habits and playing routine. The categories are hardcore gamers, casual gamers, old school gamers and competitive gamers. Let us discuss all these categories, one by one.

Hardcore Gamers
The term 'hardcore gamers,' is used to describe people who play video games to a very excessive extent. They play longer than a casual video game player, and playing games is not a hobby for them, indeed it is an obsession.

Hardcore gamers maintain all types of consoles and video gaming systems to ensure that they play all video games available in the market. Moreover, if a game is released for different console with additional features according to the console, a hardcore gamer would buy all versions of the game. One of the prime examples of this case was a video game named Soul Caliber II. This game offered a unique character for every console system.

Hardcore gamer make their game selection and purchasing decisions independently. These gamers are also referred as video game addicts who even show withdrawal symptoms.

Casual Gamers
Casual gamers are the people who play video games for the sake of entertainment. A majority of video game players belong to this group. Casual gamers are not an avid fan of video game playing; instead they treat video gaming as a time-pass activity.

Moreover, they are not keen to buy every new game title available in the market. They like to play games which are easy-to-play and don't require longer time or extreme thinking.

Old School Gamers
Old school gamers are the people who like to play video games which were developed as 8 bit or 16 bit video games. These people have a respect for old games and they consider them equally good as compared to the modern 32 bit and 64 bit games. Moreover, they also maintain a good collection of old consoles and video games. Some people are also in the business of refurbishing old games, so that they can be used again.

Competitive Gamers
Also called as professional video gamers, these people play video games for making money or for the sake of competing with other game players. These players enjoy playing multiplayer games which include fighting each other or battling each other out. A majority of competitive gamers play games on the internet.

So, now that you know all sorts of video game players, you should question yourself- to which category of game players do I belong?
